Thalia Petropoulou is a Specialist Colorectal Surgeon and has an International Clinical and Academic career between Greece and the UK.
She is a pioneer in Robotic and Laparoscopic Colorectal (Minimally Invasive) Surgery and she is the only Greek surgeon who is certified by the European Academy of Robotic Colorectal Surgery (EARCS).
She is board certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS). At present, she holds a substantial Colorectal Consultant post in Athens, Greece.
She holds the only International Robotic Colorectal Fellowship, in Greece, and is officially qualified to perform Minimally Invasive procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System.
She is a Trainer in Robotic Colorectal Surgery at the Association of the Laparoendoscopic & Robotic Surgeons ( ALSGBI) of Great Britain & Ireland.
Robotic Surgery is the most advance method of Minimally Invasive Surgery, which allows us to operate with more accuracy, precision, and give us more flexibility and control.
Laparoscopic or “minimally invasive” or ‘’key hole’’ surgery is a specialized technique for performing surgery.
Practically all abdominal operations can be performed laparoscopically, by trained surgeons.
Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery is a minimally invasive procedure that allows us to remove large rectal polyps or/ and early rectal cancer without the need for major resection.
The procedure is performed through the rectum, with the use of an endoscopic platform.
The risk of complications is minimal, in comparison with major resections, and the tumor or the polyp can be excised to full thickness. Post-operative pain is minimal and the patient usually returns home the same day.
The future of surgery is not as far as we might think!
For the first time in Greece, the first robotic right colectomy was successfully performed at the Athens Euroclinic, with total mesocolon and lymph node resection level C (CME), which is an innovative robotic procedure performed on patients with cancer on the right part of the colon and increases survival rates by 10%, at all stages of the disease, compared to the existing techniques.
For the first time in Europe, it was carried out at the Athens Euroclinic by Ms. Thalia Petropoulou MD, PhD, FRCS, Surgeon, Specialized in Robotic & Minimally Invasive Lower Digestive Surgery and her team, Robotic Colectomy through Natural Holes (Robotic NOTES), i.e. without an incision in the abdomen. The patient recovered smoothly and was mobilized just 2 hours after the surgery, while she was discharged the next day in very good clinical condition.
Enabling surgical care to get patients back to what matters.
